Day 14: What God has Joined, Let No Man Separate

Day 14: What God has Joined, Let No Man Separate

Recently I had the joy of attending a wedding of a sweet young couple. As part of their ceremony, they acted out the verse, Ecclesiastes 4:12, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” By attaching three cords to a ring and braiding them together, they showed how they intend to make God an interwoven part of their life and showed their commitment to making God a focus in their relationship. They knew that their marriage, without the strength of God running through it, would not be strong.
After 28 years of marriage, I’ve learned many things, but what it all boils down to, for me, is this. God is the only one who can fill me up, love me unconditionally and satisfy all my inner desires. My spouse is my partner in life, in faith, in challenges and in fun. But my husband and I will let each other down. If I rely on him to be everything to me, I will be disappointed and dissatisfied. Only God can be all things to me and hold my marriage together with a cord that cannot be easily broken.
Today, let’s pray for the couples in our lives, for our own marriage and for the future marriages of our kids, grandkids or ourselves. Let’s pray that God would satisfy us, fill us and love us with a love that we can share with our spouse.
