John 14:1, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.”
Jesus’ famous statement of being the way, the truth and the life in John 14:6 is preceded by his statement of comfort in 14:1. Jesus has just told his disciples that he will be betrayed by one of them and will be going to a cross. Their reaction was naturally to have troubled hearts. We need this statement of Jesus today just as much as they did. Many of our hearts are troubled right now. A quick watch of the news or scan through your social media feed often brings trouble to our hearts. So, let Jesus’ words wash over you again, don’t be troubled, believe in God and believe in Jesus- the one raised from the dead. God has got this. Tell it to yourselves over and over again. If even death cannot stop the Lord Jesus, then neither can any of the troubling circumstances we are facing. Take a moment to write down the specific items that are troubling your heart. Be very clear, express your feelings. Then apply John 14:6 to them. How is Jesus the way in the situation you’re facing? How is Jesus the truth in the circumstance that is bothering you? How is Jesus the life in the midst of the trouble? Ask for an increased ability to trust God and for your heart to be untroubled by Him.
